San Diego Photography - About
About San Diego Photographer Roman Castro
Humble Beginning
I read many photo books and experimented with all the techniques I came across. I started my professional photography career in Fillmore, Ca. It was 2004 when I did my first paying shoot. Once I felt my basics were solid I decided to work on a photojournalism portfolio to be a news photographer. I came up with my own ideas for photo stories and covered many local events.
"Hi, I want to be a news photographer."
These were the words out of my mouth when I walked into the Fillmore Herald in 2006. I believe the reply was something like, "What kind of camera do you have." DSLR, I was in. I covered anything and everything from science fairs and festivals to traffic accidents and fires. The Fillmore Herald closed in 2007 after being the news paper of record in Fillmore for 99 years. It was a sad day.
The Acorn - After the Fillmore Herald I moved on and started sending letters to other newspapers in and around Ventura County. After a few months I received a reply from one of the photo editors/photographers form The Acorn news paper. The Acorn is a weekly paper that runs different editions that cover a cluster of cities including Thousand Oaks and neighboring cities. I covered a wide range of subjects and always looked forward to my next assignment. I shot for The Acorn News Papers for a little over two years before making the move to San Diego, CA.
San Diego - Visiting a friend I fell in love with this city. It is the perfect place for photos. There are so many places and interesting people I had to move here. In 2008, I made the move and only regret not moving here sooner.
